A little girl gives a coin as Christmas tip to the postman standing at the door and holding letters in his left hand; wintry landscape beyond. George Leighton printed and published the Illustrated London News 1858-1885. He trained under George Baxter, and patented a process of colour printing invented by Dean Wolstenholme, junior.

Aqautint with hand-colouring, rare, platemark 250 x 325mm (9¾ x 12¾"). Repairs.
Sleighing scene by Henry Thomas Alken (1785-1851), one of a famous family of painters and engravers. Beginning in 1813, Henry designed prints for London's leading sporting printsellers, specializing in field sports and coaching scenes. While Alken occasionally provided illustrations for travel books (including one on Rio de Janeiro), this American scene is an oddity in his work as a whole.

[Two Puppies] A Merry Christmas.

Two puppies in a barn, with a bowl of Turkey bones. The scene is surrounded by satirical vignettes of Christmas, dogs and cats. Frank Paton (1856-1909) was a successful artist during his lifetime and could even count Queen Victoria as an admirer of his work. He is perhaps most widely known for his series of etched Christmas cards published annually by Edward Ernest Leggatt from 1880 until Paton's death in 1909. They were intended to be a cut above the average Christmas card and sold for half a guinea each. A number of the prints would be sent from the printers to be signed in pencil by Paton. Between 1880-85 the cards did not have a specific title

An ox and ass can be seen on the left and three cherubs appear in clouds in upper right.

Interesting advertisement for John Carter's domestic appliances for the disabled. The illustrations are captioned and include aids for mobility, eating and reading.
Provenance: from a scrap album compiled c.1840 - 1880 by Alfred Towgood of Riverside, a paper mill owner at St. Neots, Huntingdon. He was also a Lieutenant in the Duke of Manchester's Light Horse.

A personal invitation to view the jewellery collection of the Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Company Ltd. William Gibson established himself as a foremost jewellers of his day and established himself as Messers. Gibson and Co., Ltd. in 1891 and continued to the be leading firm in the jewellery trade in the UK and Ireland. Extending his trade further, in 1880 he went into partnership with John Langman and founded the Goldmsiths' and Silversmiths' Company. They held substantial premises covering a quarter of an acre, on the corner of Regent Street and Glasshouse Street.
