The Rt. Honble. Lady Eleanor Butler & Miss Ponsonby "The Ladies of Llangollen". [Facsimile signatures below.] Drawn on Stone by J.H. Lynch. Day & Haghe Lithrs. to the Queen. Entd. at Stationer's Hall. [n.d., c.1835.] Tinted lithograph. Sheet: 375 x 275mm (15 x 11"). Laid on album sheet with decorative border. Touching portraits of Sarah Ponsonby (1755 - 1831), daughter of Chambre Brabazon Ponsonby, cousin of the Earl of Bessborough, and Lady Eleanor Charlotte Butler (1739 - 1829). They resolved to live together in complete isolation from society in a cottage at Plasnewydd in the vale of Llangollen, Denbighshire, north Wales. Their names were not known in the neighbourhood, and they were called 'the ladies of the vale.' They lived in complete seclusion for some fifty years, and neither left the cottage for a single night until their deaths. Their devotion to each other and their eccentric manne...

Very rare mezzotint with fine hand colour. 355 x 255mm (14 x 10"). Trimmed into plate at bottom, narrow margins elsewhere.  Very decorative image, Cupid stands by a rosebush, drawing his bow and aiming at the viewer, his quiver and loose arrows at his feet. A mezzotint copy of an etching, 'L'Amour menaçant' by Christian von Mechel after Carle van Loo, 1764 (BM 1875,1009.356), engraved by Richard Purcell under his pseudonym Charles Corbutt. Lennox-Boyd records it being listed in the catalogues of Sayer in 1766 & Sayer & Bennett in 1775, but we have found no other mention.   Not in CS or BM. Ex: Collection of The Hon. University of Greenwich    The Great Court Of Greenwich Hospital. Plate 80. Published Sepr 2d 1799, by T. Malton. Aquatint with etching. Printed area: 275 x 360mm (10¾ x 14¼"). Trimmed inside plate. A view with figures and dogs in the grounds of Greenwich Hospital, designed by Christopher Wren, and built between 1696 and 1712. The hospital closed in 1869. Between 1873 and 1998 it was the Royal Naval College, Greenwich. A plate to Malton's 'Picturesque Tour', 1792 - 1801.
