Mezzotint, printed on chine collĂ©, limited edition of 150 signed by the engraver, PSA blindstamp. 515 x 410mm (20¼ x 16¼"), with large margins.  Alexander Nasmyth's famous portrait, which was painted so that it could be engraved for the 1787 second edition of 'Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect'. Portrait of Charles Edward Stuart, the Young Pretender (1720-1788), disguised as a woman, three-quarter length in an oval directed to right, looking towards the viewer with head turned to left, holding the frilled edge of a cap in front of him, wearing a lace-trimmed fichu and cap. August Acquisitions: Catalogue 139!

  The Ladies Hero or the Unfortunate James MacLeane Esq.r. Done from the Original late in the possession of M.r Salt Keeper of the Gate House. Printed for T. Harrison. Publish'd according to Act of Parliament Sep.r 29. 1750. Scarce hand-coloured engraving with etching. Sheet 340 x 250mm (13½ x 9¾"). Trimmed within plate, edge black-ruled, a few stains, mounted in album paper at edges. Horizontal crease left. Full-length portrait of James MacLaine (1724-1750), grocer-turned-highwayman, with the mask he used as a disguise on the ground to the side. With his partner William Plunkett (a bankrupt apothecary), he committed 20 robberys in six months between Hounslow Heath and Hyde Park. His most famous victim was Horace Walpole, who was grazed by an accidentally-fired bullet. Captured, Maclaine was sent to trial at the Old Bailey, where his dashing good looks created a sensation: he reputedly received nearly 3,000 guest...

[n.d., c.1810.] Very rare hand-coloured etching. Sheet 350 x 255mm (13¾ x 10"). Tear on lower right. Trimmed. Joseph Grimaldi (1778 – 1837) in a scene from the pantomime The Red Dwarf. Grimaldi faces the pantaloon, who is on all fours dressed in a lion's skin, ass's head, eagle's wings, cat's feet and a fish's tail. Early clown image. Not in Georges BM Satire. H.y Leonidas Rolfe. 1851. Published by the Artist at his Studio, Shorter's Court, Throgmorton S.t City. Oblong folio, contemporary half morocco gilt, with marbled boards, red morocco gilt title label on front board; lithographed illustrated title pasted on original wrapper; 7 tinted lithographs on thick paper, mounted on stubs, each sheet approx. 355 x 540mm (14 x 21¼"). Binding worn, plates with some surface soiling and spotting, two plates with bottom right corner knocked. The plates are: Pope, Minnow, Perch, Gudgeon; Barbel, Bream, Chub; Eel, Roach, Dace, Bleak; Tench, Carp; Trout; Graylng; Pike. The set of plates by Henry Leonidas Rolfe (1823-81).
