Printer's crease bottom right in margin. Christopher Pinchbeck (1670?-1732), maker of clocks and automata, here shown holding an open pocket watch. He also invented 'pinchbeck', an alloy of copper and zinc that resembled gold, which created a new market for costume jewelry. Among his clients was Louis XIV, for whom he made a music clock. In 1717 he advertised a clock at one thousand guineas (appoximately £140,000 today). From 1721 until his death his address was 'at the sign of ‘The Astronomico-Musical Clock' in Fleet Street.  In case you've missed it the Tate Britain are having a Hogarth exhibition from 3 November 2021 – 20 March 2022. In this exposition his most famous London satirical images are being contextualised by his other paintings and graphic works as well as those by his European contemporaries. They start the exhibition with various depictions of William Hogarth, including paintings, a miniature and a bust.   William Hogarth. Murphy, North side Paddington Green. Rare and extremely fine mezzotint. Sheet 490 x 620mm (19¼ x 24¼"). Framed. Thread margins. Unexamined out of frame. A superb example of the finest images produced in the history of mezzotint, depicting a a recumbent tigress, probably the Royal Tiger in Stubbs's possession when he died. The painting had originally been engraved by John Dixon in 1772; however that mezzotint plate had been destroyed, so John Murphy was allowed to engrave a new plate. Lennox-Boyd 133: ii of ii.
