    [Hirayama Jinta] Japanese Prints of Shell Effects. [n.d., c.1877.] Six very scarce Japanese woodblocks, printed in colours. Each sheet c. 220 x 150mm (8¾ x 6"), laid on card in pairs, with a typed English title label (as above). A little wear. Six rare Japanese Ukiyo-e prints promoting shell-effect fireworks by Hirayama Jinta (1840-1900), each titled in Japanese. In 1877 Hirayama Jinta founded a firework manufactory famous for its innovations in bringing new colours to Japanese fireworks. He exported fireworks to Britain, where they were marketed by Brocks, who offered versions of these prints numbered to refer to a price list. In 1883, Hirayama Jinta became the first Japanese to earn a patent from America as a fireworks expert. The Japanese titles suggest these were issued for the Japanese market but acquired by a Briton, perhaps at the first public display of Hirayama Jinta's products (see ref 57178). An exp...

    The March of Interlect or a Dust-Man & Family of the 19th Century. Marks fecit. [n.d., c.1830.] Coloured etching. Sheet 160 x 210mm (6¼ x 8¼"). Trimmed to printed border, laid on album paper, with second droll on reverse. A satire on the aspirations of the working classes. The affluently dressed dustman's wife asks her husband if he has seen the latest issue of 'La Bells Ass-emblee' (John Bell's La Belle Assemblée, or Bell's Court and Fashionable Magazine). The second droll is 'Very Wet', a coloured aquatint (180 x 140mm, trimmed to image), with a well-dress woman getting soaked despite her umbrella. Not in BM.   A Representation of the Royal Fire-Work perform'd by the directions of Coll. Hopkey and Coll. Borgard on the River of Thames near Whitehall, y.e 7.th of July 1713. being y.e day appointed for a publick Thanksgiving for the General Peace. B. Lens fec. et exc. [n.d. 1713] Extremely rare & fine mezzotint. 520 x 410mm (20½ x 16"). Trimmed to plate mark. Horizontal centre fold crease with minor creasing and scratches across the image. Small nicks to the edges. Loss to bottom left corner filled in with ink. An architectural facade of paired columns adorned with statues and the royal crest. Fireworks burst into the sky in the background as well as on the Thames in the foreground. The statues take the allegorical form of Prudence, Temperance, Fortitude, Justice, Courage, Victory, Peace and Conduct.   Jacob Bates. The Famous English Horse Rider. Der berhumte Englishe Berieter Jacob Bates. Jeaque Bates Fameux Piquer anglois. G. P. Nusbeigel, ad viv. del et sculpsit. Norib 1766. Extremely scarce engraving, 18th century watermark. 375 x 480mm (14¾ x 19"). Engraver's text weakly inked, margin notched lower left, slight creasing in right margin. Small margins. Jacob Bates, an eighteenth century English equestrian performer, was one of the first showmen to make a mark as an entertainer. Although his emulators (Price, Johnson, Balp, Coningham, Faulkes, and 'Old' Sampson), had become fixtures of London's pleasure gardens, it does not appear that Bates ever performed in England. Instead he based himself in the German States, but performed as far away as Russia (1764-65) and America (1772-73).     John Rennie. Chantrey R.A. Sc.t. Reynolds Eng.r. [n.d. c. 1820] Mezzotint. 505 x 355mm (20 x 14"). Framed. Unexamined out of frame. An engraving of Sir Francis Chantrey's bust of civil engineer John Rennie (1761-1821), set in an arched alcove, now in the National Portrait Gallery. Rennie is most famous for his Waterloo Bridge (1811-7). Chantrey (1781-1841) was the leading portrait sculptor in Regency England, His subjects included George III (now in the Guildhall), George IV (equestrian statue in Trafalgar Square) and George Washington (Massachusetts State House).
