The Prince of Wales (1762-1830) lies asleep, hugging his pillow, surrounded by visions including Princess Caroline (1768-1821) as a radiant beauty and George III (1738-1820) with a generous allowance.  A satire of the Prince's consent to marry on condition of the payment of his debts and an increased income. Mezzotint, printed on chine collé, limited edition of 150 signed by the engraver, PSA blindstamp. 515 x 410mm (20¼ x 16¼"), with large margins.  Alexander Nasmyth's famous portrait, which was painted so that it could be engraved for the 1787 second edition of 'Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect'. Very rare mezzotint with fine hand colour. 355 x 255mm (14 x 10"). Trimmed into plate at bottom, narrow margins elsewhere.  Very decorative image, Cupid stands by a rosebush, drawing his bow and aiming at the viewer, his quiver and loose arrows at his feet. A mezzotint copy of an etching, 'L'Amour menaçant' by Christian von Mechel after Carle van Loo, 1764 (BM 1875,1009.356), engraved by Richard Purcell under his pseudonym Charles Corbutt. Lennox-Boyd records it being listed in the catalogues of Sayer in 1766 & Sayer & Bennett in 1775, but we have found no other mention.   Not in CS or BM. Ex: Collection of The Hon. Binding worn, plates with some surface soiling and spotting, two plates with bottom right corner knocked. The plates are: Pope, Minnow, Perch, Gudgeon; Barbel, Bream, Chub; Eel, Roach, Dace, Bleak; Tench, Carp; Trout; Graylng; Pike. The set of plates by Henry Leonidas Rolfe (1823-81).
