Collectors' Stamps

A selection of prints which carry the collectors' stamps of their illustrious former owners:

A fine portrait with decorative border, from the 'admirable and rich' Cabinet Brentano-Brickenstock, founded by the Viennese J.M. von Birckenstock (1738-1809), friend of the great print scholar Adam Bartsch, and continued through subsequent generations:

Anselmus van Halle pinxit. Petrus de Ioden sculpsit.

Engraving, with collector's stamp on verso with very large margins. Plate 305 x 196mm (12 x 7¾"). Excellent impression.
Anatasio Ridolfi, a Catholic theologian and secretary of the Grand Duke of Tuscany. He served as Envoy for the Peace of Westphalia.

A portrait of Johannes Froben, who worked with Erasmus and Holbein. This print was in the collection of Friedrich August II of Saxony, whose uncle Albert founded the famous Albertina museum in Vienna:

Portrait of Johannes Froben, bust to left, wearing fur-trimmed coat; in a circle on a pedestal. Johann Froben (c.1460-1527) was a famous printer and publisher in Basel. He printed the works of Erasmus of Rotterdam and some woodcuts by Holbein.

This tiny mezzotint comes from the collection of the Arenbergs, described by Lugt as 'amongst the greatest patrons of the arts in Belgium since the 16th century':

A portrait of Thomas Howard, himself a distinguished art collector (see our post on Henry Stuart) from the collection of Julian Marshall (1836-1903), whose collection 'was distinguished by a rare uniformity and quality of condition':

Thomas Howard (1585-1646) 14th Earl of Arundel was a prominent English courtier during the reigns of King James I and King Charles I, but he made his name as a Grand Tourist and art collector rather than as a politician. From Thomas Birch's "The Heads of Ilustrious Persons of Great Britain".

This arresting portrait once owned to John Charrington, keeper of prints at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge (and author of the standard work on prints after Rembrandt), and subsequently passed through the collection of the Hon. Christopher Lennox-Boyd, one of the great print collectors of the twentieth century:

Another portrait after Reynolds, which fittingly was owned by Sir Thomas Lawrence, who succeeded Reynolds as the pre-eminent portrait painter of his day (and was also president of the RA):

Whole-length portrait sitting to left on the ground, her right arm resting on a stone, looking down at her son who has his left hand on her chin; trees behind. Elizabeth, Countess of Carnarvon (1752-1826) was wife of Henry Herbert, 1st Earl of Carnarvon; seen here with her son Charles Herbert (1774-1808) joined the navy and drowned.

An excellent mezzotint of a shepherdess once owned by Fritz Reiss, who possessed 'a rich collection of mezzotints, one of the finest of its kind':
