Catalogue 141: For the ABA Chelsea Rare Book Fair!

  Cover image: [The Captive.] E.J. Detmold. [pencil signature.] [1923.] Etching, signed by the artist, published edition of 100 proofs. 350 x 300mm (13¾ x 12"), with large margins. A fantastic image of an eagle perched on a rock with a middle eastern city in the background with the temple to the left. To the right can be seen two camels seated with the city walls and mountains in the background. Edward Julius Detmold (1883-1957) began etching with his twin, Maurice, and exhibited at The Royal Academy aged 13. In 1908 Maurice committed suicide and Edward, traumatised, stopped etching. In 1922 an appreciative article about the Detmolds in the Print Collector's Quarterly inspiring Edward to return to printmaking. Published 25th March 1795, by Laurie & Whittle, 53, Fleet Street, London. Rare mezzotint. 350 x 255mm (13¾ x 10"). Trimmed to plate at bottom, laid on album page. Small margins on 3 sides. Full-length portrait of Caroline of Brunswick, wearing plumed head-dress and full court dress decorated with large ribbons and tasselled bows, in front of an arcade with pillars and a classical urn. Sheet: 345 x 250mm (13½ x 9¾"). Trimmed and laid on album sheet at edges. A half-length portrait of Henry VIII set within an oval. CS 185.1. [Ref: 46319 ]   £260.00   (£312.00 incl.VAT)  The Exhibtion 'Six Lives The Stories of Henry VIII’s Queens' at the National Portrait Gallery has sadly come to a close. The magnificent Tudor paintings by Hans Holbein the Younger were the main features however there were also contemporary photography by Hiroshi Sugimoto. ABA Chelsea Rare Book Fair 2024!

  Good news everyone! We are once again particpating in the ABA Chelsea Rare Book Fair at Chelsea Old Town Hall.  You can dowload e-tickets here. Or pick up physical tickets from our shop.  Check out our highlights here . Come and see us 1-2nd November; we'll be on the stage. In preparation for this we shall be releasing our catalogue for the fair in late October (more details to follow), but before this we are looking at putting up a listing 2nd October. If there is anything in particular you would like us to bring please let us know.

August Acquisitions: Catalogue 139!

  The Ladies Hero or the Unfortunate James MacLeane Esq.r. Done from the Original late in the possession of M.r Salt Keeper of the Gate House. Printed for T. Harrison. Publish'd according to Act of Parliament Sep.r 29. 1750. Scarce hand-coloured engraving with etching. Sheet 340 x 250mm (13½ x 9¾"). Trimmed within plate, edge black-ruled, a few stains, mounted in album paper at edges. Horizontal crease left. Full-length portrait of James MacLaine (1724-1750), grocer-turned-highwayman, with the mask he used as a disguise on the ground to the side. With his partner William Plunkett (a bankrupt apothecary), he committed 20 robberys in six months between Hounslow Heath and Hyde Park. His most famous victim was Horace Walpole, who was grazed by an accidentally-fired bullet. Captured, Maclaine was sent to trial at the Old Bailey, where his dashing good looks created a sensation: he reputedly received nearly 3,000 guest

  [''Old Man Wearing Velvet Cap'' or ''Old Man with Spectacles''.] Thos Frye, Pictor, Invenit & Sculpsit [c.1760]. Sold at the Golden Head of Red Lamp, near the Corner of Greville Street in Hatton Garden. Mezzotint, 515 x 365mm (20¼ x 14¼), with small margins. A fine impression of this magnificent image. Light foxing at the bottom, not in image. Very faint crease near left margin in the centre. A man wearing a velvet cap facing the right, his left side profile on show. He holds in his right hand a pair of spectacles. From Thomas Frye's (1710-62) set of mezzotint 17 life-size heads which he published in two series between 1760 and 1762 and for which he is chiefly remembered. Russell believes this could be a self-portrait or another artist that dwelled with Frye, 'Query, a portrait of Thomas Frye. On an impression in Mr. J.
