Festive Listing: Catalogue 133!

    Peacock and Pie. [Francis Barlow] [illegible] N44 Wells S.t Oxford [J Hinton?] [illegible] 268 Hol[born?] [William Elliott?] Mezzotint with wonderful printed colour, hand finished. 480 x 595 (18¾ x 23½"), with large margins. From Fable CIV of Aesop Fables. Also known as the Parliament of Birds plate 33, Fable XVI. We have been unable to find any reference to the large mezzotint. A peacock on full display is surrounded by birds mostly open beaked seemingly in reverence. Birds include: an owl, an ostrich, an emu, a parrot, a heron, chickens, a duck, a dove, a magpie and a falcon. See BM 1867,0413.394 for the drawing. Summer Miscellany: Catalogue 130!

  Cover image: Studies of Fresh Water Fish. Drawn on stone from Nature, and respectfully dedicated (with permission) to S. Gurney, Jun.r, Esq.r, (Carshalton) by his obedient Serv.t. H.y Leonidas Rolfe. 1851. Published by the Artist at his Studio, Shorter's Court, Throgmorton S.t City. Oblong folio, contemporary half morocco gilt, with marbled boards, red morocco gilt title label on front board; lithographed illustrated title pasted on original wrapper; 7 tinted lithographs on thick paper, mounted on stubs, each sheet approx. 355 x 540mm (14 x 21¼"). Binding worn, plates with some surface soiling and spotting, two plates with bottom right corner knocked. The plates are: Pope, Minnow, Perch, Gudgeon; Barbel, Bream, Chub; Eel, Roach, Dace, Bleak; Tench, Carp; Trout; Graylng; Pike. The set of plates by Henry Leonidas Rolfe (1823-81). As the plates were issued loose in wrappers, complete sets are unusual and very scarce

 The Wallace collection have a fantastic exhibition of dog art! Portraits of Dogs: From Gainsborough to Hockney from 29th March – 15th October 2023.
